HAPPY 2012! It's going to be another great year at Mothers and Daughters.

Janauary has certainly been a crazy, busy month for us! After Christmas, we changed the store around, opened it up, cleared it out and got it ready for another wonderful year. Janet and I went to the Atlanta Market for 5 days then headed for the Dallas market with Mom for 4 more days. We have just simply, wonderful things coming in!

Our purse and jewelry department is loaded with brand new purses, jewelry sets, bracelets, scarves, rings, oh, I could just go on and on. But you get the point. You just have to come see the new jewelry - just darling! (And did we mention - terrific prices!)

Also, just in is our new spring and summer tabletop collections. Quilts for your table, placemats, napkins and lots of napkin rings! We have 6 new patterns for you to choose from. Just so warm and homey - oh I just love them!

We get to meet so many wonderful people when we go to market. Often the designers of the lines are there, artists are in their showrooms and great people like Amy Sebeck pictured here, helped us with a Suzy Toronto order. We all have one thing in mind. To bring our customers the very best that the market has to offer.

We love the garden look and there will be so many new spring and summer wreaths, garlands, nests, bunnies and birds. Oh my. Loovvveeee!!!

These are really gonna be great! The most adorable beach bags in lucious summer prints and matching straw hats! Can't you just imagine yourself on the beach right now? First stop - Mothers and Daughters - bag, tote, hat, sunglasses, coverup, cooler and on and on and on. We have it!

The cutest totes you have ever seen! Lots coming in! These will all include a vinyl monogram of your choice. If you can make a decision that is.

These necklaces were a hit last year and they have added to their line. Wonderful sayings, makes a great gift and they are so reasonably priced! Wait till you see all the new ones!

Lots of new totes, lunch bags and duffels in fun, summer colors!

We couldn't go to market without stopping by to see Suzy Toronto! We love her line and have added much more this time. A whole new section of greeting cards. You will find the perfect one for every occassion. She is always a doll.

New terry towel wraps coming in the sofest fabric ever! These will make darling graduation gifts. Monogrammed of course!

For 17 years we have sold "Bearington" baby items. They continue to be one of our customer favorites. New designs coming - and they are adorable!

New aprons coming from Peking Designs. This is Kate Spain, one of the designers of their new lines! She was so sweet. We were ooing and aaahhing over her new designs and she was watching us over in the corner. We didn't know who she was and wondered why she was smiling at us. Heck, I would too, if people were liking my stuff! Can't wait till they come in.

"The Gathering of Friends" cookbook series has just added number four! They are all in the store and make wonderful gifts for newlyweds or anyone who wants to learn new, easy and delicious recipes. These books have always been a customer favorite!

This is Kelly Rae Roberts. We have carried her prints, journals and accessories for three years now. She has so many darling new things coming out.

After 5 days, 11 hours a day, walking and on your feet constantly, this is what we feel like. Yay! We are through! Oh, wait, next week we go to Dallas.

Well, that was market. For the next 4 weeks all this stuff will be coming in to the store and we will be unpacking and getting it ready for you. Thank you for supporting our shoppe this past year. We have the most wonderful customers in the world.

My friend Ann from Apple Annie's in Brandon, MS broke her foot at market in

Atlanta last January. She has been in a cast ever since.

I "borrowed" her scooter to cruise around a little.

Now that's the way to do market!

Our husbands think it's all work and no play at market!

We sure do have them fooled.

Don't worry girls, we didn't order the men's underwear!

It was a beautiful spring evening and everyone just had a lovely time.

We just got back from Dallas. Dodged some bad weather, but made it just fine.

The store is absolutely full of new purses, jewelry, wallets, scarves and

accessories. New items are coming in every day and will be for the next 4 weeks.

We can't wait to see you!

Janet and I just got back from the Atlanta Market. It was the

worst ice and snow storm there in years. We were late getting in,

but we made it! We stayed right across the street from the market and

didn't have to get out in the cold. It was freezing!

But, shopping kept us warm - here

is a little of what we ordered!

I keep telling Janet this. I've been telling her this for 56 years!
We ordered lots of new spring and summer floral!
Wreaths, garlands, geraniums and topiarys - lots of birds and nests too!

We got the new "French" look in lamps, pillows and pictures.

Suzy Toronto from "Wacky Women". She was a doll. We

ordered several items in her line. They will be fun!

One of my dear friends who has a shop in Jackson, MS (Apple Annie's), Ann Fryant

came to market too. She slipped on the ice in front of her hotel and broke her ankle! She had to have surgery in Atlanta and completely missed the market. We felt so bad for her.

I hope you are doing better Ann and just wanted you to know how much we missed seeing you.

What a delight to have these wonderful "girls" stop by the store last week

while visiting their sister Shirley Carlisle! Sue from Marrero, LA,

Fredda from Richmond, VA and Joyce from Hammond, LA were all

enjoying the beautiful weather and shopping for a few

Miss Shirley has been a "favorite" customer for years and we were so

happy to get to visit with the other sisters.

Summer Magic!

My favorite time of the year!

After watching "Summer Magic" with Hayley Mills (my favorite person ever!)

we let the summer begin!

What a great way to kick it off! A trip to Lake Tahoe and San Francisco!

Mom, me and my husband Richard and our daughter Kristy and son-in-law Clay and their children, Sam, Grace and Ben all went. It was the best vacation ever! A truly beautiful, majestic place. Just awesome everywhere we looked.This is Ben, Grace and Sam overlooking Emerald Bay.

Words just can't describe...

We went charter fishing! Caught 8 huge fish and a restaurant cooked them
for us that evening. Now that's fresh fish!

It was absolutely fabulous. They cooked them 3 ways and we ate it all.

Yes, that's my mom on that horse! 80 years old and she did everything we did.

We had to buy the coats in San Fran. They were only $20! Good thing.

I heard they make a killin' over dumb southerners who think it's hot in

CA in the summer!

We had to wear them everyday!

This was the day we left and it snowed! Oh my....it's May for cryin-out-loud!

No thanks, nice place to visit but I'll take Louisiana!

Summer is a magical time. So much fun just loading up the car and hitting the road. Don't have to worry about school and getting up early. I love to travel with my grandkids and take them every chance I get. They are just the best ever. So much fun to be with. I always tell them...

"the joy is in the journey".

We are makin' memories. It's been a blessing to be able to travel around this summer - so many great places and adventures. I am very blessed indeed.

We always have a great time at market. It's big - real big - we get tired - real tired - but we do it all for you! We ordered lots of wonderful new things that will just delight you! This is where we went. From New Orleans to Progresso and then to Cozumel Mexico -

then back to New Orleans.

Just wanted to share a few pictures with you of the cruise we took Mom on for her 80th birthday. Mom, Janet and her daughter Amy, me and my two daughters, Summer and Kristy all left on March 20 on a five day cruise to Progresso and Cozumel Mexico. On the way over the water was very rough and Janet and I were both sick for a whole day. We didn't think we would need the patch. Guess what - YOU NEED THE PATCH! Once we put them on - we got better!

It was a fun trip. Lots of relaxation, sightseeing and shopping. The food is fabulous - all you can eat everywhere you turn. The staff is so friendly and helpful. The ship was gorgeous. What a blessing to be able to take a trip like this. I know Mom will never forget it.

We just got back from market in Atlanta! We braved the cold and snow and shopped for 5 days to bring you the newest, cutest and bestest gifts and home accessories! New items will arrive nearly every day! Make sure Mothers and Daughters is on your "Have To Go To" lists. We ordered so many wonderful garden inspired things for your home ! Canvases, bird houses, vintage pieces, chalk boards, message boards and so on.
Marie Osmond was there! We saw her, but too late to take our picture with her. That's not us. They cut the line off right when they came to Janet and I. Go figure.

This little girl is dressed like the new baby dolls and blankets we ordered. They are so cute!

A few months ago, I found two old friends from my grade school in Enid, OK on Facebook! I haven't seen or heard from them since I left in the 7th grade. We were all three friends for many years and I have so many wonderful memories of them and my old hometown. Last October, I just packed up my car and took a little road trip to go see them and get re-acquainted. This is us in the 6th grade....

I am third from left on top row. BFF Donna is 6th from left on second from top and other BFF Debbie is 3rd from left on third from top row. Well, now have you got that? Whew! Anyhoo...here's us now!

Debbie, Susan and Donna. We just had a blast talking about the "good ole days". They are both just the sweetest, loveliest ladies! They still live in Enid. Thank you both for the trip down memory lane. I'm so glad we found each other again.

This is my old grade school - Adams Elementary. Oh I loved that place. So many fun times and good memories. I can still smell the warm bologna sandwiches in our metal lunchboxes in the coat closet in our room. I just really had fun being a kid.

And this is the house I grew up in. It was a split level, probably less than 1100 sq. ft. and I thought it was a mansion! Talk about lots of memories. I sat in the parking lot across the street for over an hour and just remembered all the good times we had there. I laughed and then I cried....Dad built this house and now he's gone. We ran all over the neighborhood till way past dark....played jacks on that front porch...sneaked out the bedroom window...and just lived life.

My life's motto has always been..."The joy is in the journey". And it certainly is.

I encourage you to try FaceBook if you haven't already. I have found so many old friends and it has been great fun reconnecting with all of them. So many of our customers at Mothers and Daughters have become our good friends too and I just wanted to share my little adventure with you. Hope you enjoyed!

The ELF on the SHELF!

From My Family to Yours,
This charming tradition began for our family when my children were very small. Like most children through the ages, they wanted to know how Santa really knew who was naughty or who was nice. Their answer, as in my own childhood, came in the form of a small pixie-elf.
The first time the elf arrived at our home, my children officially adopted him by giving him a name. Each year he would arrive around the holidays, usually at Thanksgiving. His sole responsibility was to watch the children's behavior and report it to Santa each night. The next morning after the children awoke, they discovered the elf had returned from the North Pole and was now resting in a new and different place. My children would race each other out of bed to try and be the first to spy him in his new position.
Over the years the tradition was perfected and rules were introduced. For example, to better preserve his mystique the children were not allowed to touch him but talking to him was a different matter all together. My children shared many secrets with the elf, and while he was under strict orders not to talk to them, the elf was under no such orders where grown-ups were concerned.
Unwittingly, the tradition provided an added benefit: it helped the children to better control themselves. All it took was a gentle reminder that the "elf is watching," for errant behavior to be modified.
I never dreamed this simple tradition would lead to so many treasured Christmas memories for our entire family. It is my earnest desire that The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition will bring as much joy to your family as it has to mine.

Our Dad, Gene Norwood passed away on August 26. He had been ill for awhile. When we first opened, Dad had the space in the back of our store and sold antique furniture. Thank you to all our friends and good customers for your calls, cards and condolences. We will miss him very much.

Another Road Trip! Love Them!

On the road with my husband. Going to Tulsa and Canton! This is a old fashioned drugstore in Jefferson, Texas. Adorable antique-shop town. This store looks exactly like it did 100 years ago. If you are ever through there - you just have to stop. So much fun.

I'm always on the look out for shakers for Janet to make her wondeful tassells. Didn't find too many this time.

Richard is always on the look out for food!

Gotta love the DQ!! (Dairy Queen). The BEST strawberry milkshakes ever! Why don't we have one in Baton Rouge?

On to Tulsa to shop the "Trading Post" with my cousins. A fabulous, fun junk store - takes us two hours to cover it!

That's Jessica - she doesn't have a clue what these are! Metal skates with a key! Oh, how much fun did I have on these? One size fits all.

Have to stop and have a hamburger and fries at Ron's in Tulsa. One of the best hamburgers I have ever eaten. Why doesn't Baton Rouge have one of these?

Then off to Canton, Texas. Only had a few hours to shop the whole thing. I was by myself and needed my sister and my mommy with me. It just happened to be open while we were on our way home.

Lots of pretty things - need a trailer!

And of course, one more hamburger and fries at the Dairy Palace - Home of the World's Best Hamburgers - in Canton. Be sure and stop if you go through there - they really are delicious!

It was a bluebird day coming home. Always fun to visit with my cousins, shop the junk stores, eat the junk food and be with my husband. Happy Trails!!

Atlanta Market!!

Hello!!! We're at the Atlanta Market! This is the view from our room on the 24th floor! And by the way, did I tell you I hate heights?
Janet and I shopped for 6 days covering the market for all the newest and cutest things for fall and Christmas.

There are three buildings 20 stories high each at market. And we shopped on every one of them. This is the inside of the apparel mart. This is definately the time to wear comfy shoes!

"The Elf on the Shelf" coming to the shoppe. Be sure and come check this book out for your children this Christmas season. It is adorable!

Lots of new Christmas ceramics, tea pots, cocoas, teas and coffee coming up!

Glory Haus!! We love them. New hand-painted canvases, ceramic crosses and mugs. Old favorites that we have sold out of and new canvases are on their way.

It's going to be a vintage Christmas at Mothers and Daughters. Darling snowmen, santas, angels and trees all done up in red and green and black and white. Oooohhhh...we can't wait.

Our coffee lady! She's a sweetheart too!! All of our vendors are wonderful people and we love doing business with them. She's getting our Christmas coffee ready to ship!

I have so many lovely flowers, plants and bushes to look at, enjoy and take care of but right on the other side of our fence is a wonderfaul garden. It's full of tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, rosemary, mint and basil. I didn't even have to till the dirt, add soil, plant the plants, fertilize, water or stake - I did absolutely nothing and have fresh veggies and herbs everyday. What's my secret? Having a good neighbor who is retired, single and loves to garden and shares with us! Thank you Rick!

Road Trip To Canton!

This is my good friend Ann. She has a precious shop in Brandon, MS that you must see if you are ever in the area. It's just full of wonderful things. Last week Ann and I went to the Canton Mississippi craft show and shopped for our stores. We came back with two car loads full! It was hot and crowded but we always have a good time together.

Making A Memory

When I'm not working at the store, cleaning up at the store, ordering new stuff for the store or

re-decorating the store, I love to scrapbook. I thought I would share with you a fun and easy collage I did of my grandmother. She was a wonderful person and I loved her so much and miss her everyday. I didn't have near enough time here on earth with her and can't wait to see her in heaven.

First, gather lots of your old photos and copy them on your computer. I never use the originals. You may harm them. I used a 16x20 canvas board and covered it with different pieces of scrapbook paper using Mod Podge. (Great stuff!)

Then lay your pictures on the paper covered canvas and arrange in a random order. When you are satisfied with the layout, coat the back of each picture with the Mod Podge and secure to the canvas. Be sure to smooth out the wrinkles - carefully. When it completely dries, most of the wrinkles will dissappear, but I did have a few remain. Bummer. Then coat the whole thing with more Mod Podge - even several coats will look better - be sure to let each coat dry completely.

Embellish with scrapbook stickers, ribbon, and flowers. Add ribbon to the sides with a glue gun. It's fun, creative and you will enjoy it for years to come. Warning! Everyone will want you to make them one. Better go get some more Mod Podge.

Who doesn’t love a great cookbook? My mother bought me my very first one when I was 6 years old. I still have it...the Betty Crocker Cook Book for Boys and Girls pictured below. It’s a 1957 first edition. Isn’t it sweet? I have two daughters, so I wasn't sure to whom I would leave my cookbook because, really, I wanted them both to have it. The best thing happened...I found the same little book at the Heritage House in our Denham Springs Antique Village. What a find! You can find so many wonderful things in the shops in the Village.

Speaking of cookbooks….Mothers and Daughters has a wonderful selection of the darling “Gooseberry Patch” books. They are chock full of wonderful recipes, tips and tricks and always make a lovely gift for any occasion. Add one to a homemade apple cake or a batch of fresh chocolate chip cookies and the person who receives this gift will be your new best friend!
